Restore a balanced smile

Our doctors provide specialized treatment to reduce a “gummy smile” or improve the appearance of short teeth.

Oftentimes, patients are concerned about the amount of gum tissue that is visible when smiling or that their teeth appear “short”. Gingivectomy and crown lengthening procedures are techniques that are used to help reduce these esthetic issues by increasing the amount of tooth that is visible and reducing the amount of gum tissue that covers up an otherwise beautiful smile.

Gingivectomy

Gingival overgrowth can happen for many reasons, including genetics, use of certain medications, or local irritations such as metal brackets for braces. The gingivectomy procedure is a simple method to trim away the overgrown gum tissue quickly and effectively, and often doesn’t even require stitches.

Esthetic Crown Lengthening

Oftentimes, gingival overgrowth happens because the bone underneath the gums extends too far down along a tooth. In these instances, our doctors reduce and reshape the excess bone to give a more proportional gum to tooth ratio and prevent the excess gum tissue from growing back.

Functional Crown Lengthening

Sometimes a deep cavity or tooth fracture extends below the gumline and prevents your dentist from effectively bonding a new filling or crown. In these cases, our doctors remove the bone and gum tissue that are interfering with successful treatment. This method also exposes additional tooth structure so that a new filling or crown has the support it needs to function and fit well.
